On April 9, 2014 Robert Leland Bentley went to be with the Lord. He was born on March 9, 1930 in Utica, NY and was the only child of Leland and Thelma (Gage) Bentley. He graduated from Sauquoit High School and joined the Army from 1951-1953. Prior to joining the Army, he met the love of his life, Susan Lona Trippe, whom he married on January 12, 1952, together they raised six children. While living in New York, he successfully ran Sauquoit Valley Collision, Utica Auto Salvage, and Syracuse Auto Salvage. He also served as a fireman at the Willowvale Volunteer Fire Department. He was also a member of the Lions Club in Sauquoit. He enjoyed auto racing and owned a race car that was driven by Richard Fowler for several years. In 1976, Bob moved to Ormond Beach, FL., where he bought and sold Toyotas as a dealer, through Robert Bentley Autos. He spent time writing editorials on different subjects to the Orlando Sentinel which were frequently published, and attended the letter writers' forum. Later in life he worked for the Daytona Beach Visitors Bureau at the Daytona Beach Speedway giving him the opportunity to meet a wide range of people from all over the world. He loved attending services and volunteering for numerous missions at the Tomoka Christian Church in Ormond Beach as well as keeping the church vehicles cleaned and serviced and other activities that needed to be completed. Bob is survived by his wife of 62 years, Susan; and their six children and families, Robert (Sandy), Ormond Beach, FL, John (Theresa), Sauquoit, NY, William (Paula), Longwood, FL, Barbara (Andy), Deland, FL, James, Norman, OK and Kristen (John), Palm Coast, FL. From their children, they have also been blessed with 20 grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. He had a tremendous commitment to his family and a strong work ethic and a big heart. He will be missed and remembered by us all. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in his memory to the Tomoka Christian Church. A celebration of life will be held at Tomoka Christian Church at 1450 Hand Avenue, Ormond Beach, FL 32174, on April 18 at 11 AM. Condolences to the family may be shared at www.dalewoodwardfuneralhomes.com.
