Robert Matthew Paytas, age 80, passed away peacefully on February 10, 2014. He was born in 1933 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He served as a police officer for the City of Ormond Beach until 1968, where he then went on to start his own construction company, Paytas Brothers. Robert and his brother Jim founded their company in 1968, building homes in the Volusia County area for over 20 years. He retired in 1986. He loved spending time with his wife JoAnn, working in his garage, going to flea markets, fishing, and hunting. He spent his retirement years hunting in Michigan and South Carolina. Robert is survived by his beloved wife of 61 years, JoAnn Paytas; his sons, Michael Paytas (Barbara), Kenny Paytas, and Wayne Paytas (Patty); his daughters, Kathleen Paytas Anderson and Kimberly Soard (Michael); siblings, Jean Huntley, Shirley Beach, and Jim Paytas. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren who called him PAPAP; nine great grandchildren; many nieces and nephews; and family friends. A celebration of his life will be held at Settle-Wilder Funeral Home, 406 S. Orange Street, New Smyrna Beach, Florida 32168 on Saturday, March 1, 2014 at 1:00 p.m. Condolences may be made online at
