Ronald F. York, Sr., age 83, passed away on December 22, 2013 in DeLand, FL after a lengthy illness. Ron was
born in Detroit, MI, the son of Bernard A. York and Marie LaFaive York Brown. The family moved to West Palm Beach, FL in 1938 where Ron attended St. Ann Catholic School, graduating in the class of 1948. After attending the University of Detroit his freshman year, he transferred to the University of Florida from which he graduated with a degree in civil engineering. Ron was a very proud brother and alumnus of Delta Zeta chapter of Delta Tau Delta fraternity. He served four years active duty in the U.S. Navy as a Seabee and 25 years in the U.S. Naval Reserves. He was the commander of the naval reserve training center located at the Port of Palm Beach for many years retiring from the Naval Reserves with the rank of captain. Ron's civilian jobs included being the city engineer for the City of West Palm Beach in the 1960's, a partner in the firm of Klaiber & York, two different tenures with Pratt and Whitney Aircraft, and 15 years with the South Florida Water Management District. He was honored to be a member and Grand Knight of the Santa Maria Council of the Knights of Columbus in North Palm Beach. In 1994 Ron and his wife Sylvia "Sue" retired to DeLand, FL where Ron continued his participation in the Knights of Columbus Council #6274 and was a parishioner of St. Peter Catholic Church. He was especially attached to his dear friends from St. Ann and spent many happy hours arranging reunions and reminiscing about his Crusader days. He was also a proud and very loyal UF Gator. Ron was a devoted husband to Sue, his wife of 55 years, and a wonderful father to his daughter Dalia Patterson of DeLand, and sons Lynn B. York of Jupiter; and Ronald York, Jr. of Orlando. Ron was also the proud grandfather of Hunter and Heather York and Devin and Lauren Patterson. He will be very dearly missed by his family, many friends, and his beloved border collie, Holly. A mass of Christian burial will take place at St. Peter Catholic Church, 359 W. New York Ave., DeLand on Monday, December 30th, 2013 at 10:00 AM with Father Thomas Connery officiating.
