Wayne H. Chastain, age 79, of New Smyrna Beach, died Friday, December 20, 2013.
Born in Jacksonville, Mr. Chastain graduated from Stetson University and entered U.S. Navy flight training in Pensacola. After leaving the Navy, he became Director of Camp Ridgecrest in Black Mountain, North Carolina. From there, he was recruited to be Director of Management Services for the Baptist Sunday School Board in Nashville, Tennessee. Later, he founded Medinc, operator of ten free standing outpatient diagnostic centers throughout the South. After Medinc, he became a partner in Southwest Feedyards, in Amarillo, Texas. When in Amarillo, he did extensive volunteer work with the Veterans Administration. He came to New Smyrna Beach in 2002 where he enjoyed the beach, bicycle riding, running, and gardening. Always active in the communities where he lived, he became a member of the Bert Fish Medical Center Foundation. Survivors include his wife of 57 years, Kay; sons Dane and Brett, both of Edgewater; a daughter, Wendy Chastain of New Smyrna Beach; and a cousin, Jeanelle McCloud of Arden, North Carolina. A memorial service to celebrate his life will be 2:00 p.m. Saturday, January 4 at the Settle-Wilder New Smyrna Beach Chapel, with the Reverend George Painter officiating. The family will receive friends from 1:00 p.m. until service time Saturday.
