Bob Middlemas

Robert Eugene Middlemas, 66 of Springfield passed away at 9:10 a.m. Wednesday, August 20, 2014 in his home after a 15-year battle with liver cancer.

Bob was born August 17, 1948 in Springfield to James Woodrow and Dortha Lea Chivetta Middlemas. He was a 1966 graduate of Parkview High School. He signed with the St. Louis Cardinals Baseball Organization, but his baseball career abruptly ended after a serious eye injury in 1968. Bob worked for Kraft 8 years before entering poultry transportation with Hudson Foods, which was acquired by Willowbrook and later Tyson. He served as a Driver and later Safety Officer before being forced to retire in 2000 due to his health. Besides being a heck of a good ballplayer Bob loved the outdoors, hunting, fishing and spending time at the lake with family and friends. After retirement, he became an active day trader.

Bob was raised a Baptist and these values stayed with him throughout his life. He was never afraid of hard work even after he became disabled. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge #409 and the Big Deer Investment Club.

He was preceded in death by his parents and in-laws, Bud Howell and Genelie Howell-Lurie. Bob is survived by his wife, Debby; daughter, Melissa Middlemas (Eli Grant); granddaughters, Payton and Kennedy Graves; sister, Chivetta Hackler and her family; step father-in-law, Hal Lurie, M.D.; and brother-in-law, Bruce Howell.

A celebration of Bob's life will be held at 3 p.m. Sunday, August 24, 2014 in Gorman-Scharpf Brentwood Chapel with Deacon Suzanne Lynch officiating. Visitation will follow the service. Burial will be at 10 a.m. Monday in Hazelwood Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to St. Jude's Children Research Hospital, P.O. Box 1000, Dept. 142, Memphis, TN 38148-0142.
