James F. Smith, PhD, Springfield, MO was born May 2, 1929 in Altoona, PA and died April 11, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Springfield at the age of 84.
Jim received his BA from Bethany College in 1951, his BD from TCU, and his PhD from Vanderbilt University in 1964. Jim served on the faculty at Drury University as Chaplain for 10 years and later taught Renaissance History before retiring in 1991. He loved to read, travel, and hunt. He also had interest in trains. Jim had a great sense of humor and loved to entertain others with his jokes and stories.
Jim is survived by wife AJ, Jim's son Darwin Smith, daughter Kim and husband Howard DeCelis, son Jeff Hill and Curtis Looker, granddaughter Emily DeCelis, brother Morgan Smith, sisters Pauline Gilbert, Marilyn Hancock, Geraldine Smith, and numerous nieces and nephews.
A memorial visitation will be from 2:00 until 4:00 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014 at Greenlawn Funeral Home-East in Springfield, MO.
The family is grateful to the special nurses, therapists, and aides on the south 7th floor at Mercy Hospital who gave Jim such tender care.
