Larry Wingo

Larry Joe Wingo, age 67 of Springfield, MO passed away July 17, 2014 at the Mt. Vernon Veteran's Home. He was born Dec. 18, 1946 to Willbur & Billie Wingo in Springfield, MO.

Larry is survived by his mother Billie, nephews Bryan and Wes Johnston, and close friend Joe Biro. He is preceded in death by his father, Willbur and sister, Marilyn.

Larry attended Willard High School and worked for Kraft Foods for 37 years, while also building homes.

He enjoyed building homes, fishing, going to the beach, and spending time with his family and friends.

Larry was a great American patriot. He loved his country, and proudly served in the Navy during the Vietnam War on the USS Newport News. His courage and selflessness was extraordinarily rare as he once helped save the life of a Springfield police officer who had been overcome by a suspect during an arrest, and his kindness and generosity was extended to several street kids he had taken into his home to help get back on their feet. Larry was always willing to help those in need, and the world was better with him in it.

He will be greatly missed by all who knew and loved him.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations to be made to Wounded Warrior Project in his honor.

A visitation will be held Wed., July 23, 2014 at Walnut Lawn Funeral Home from 6:00 to 8:00 P.M. Inurnment will be in Missouri Veteran's Cemetery, Springfield, MO.
