Melvin Leon Pendleton

Melvin Leon Pendleton, age 92, of Miller, Missouri passed away at 7:20 p.m. on Wednesday July 9, 2014 at the Missouri Veteran's Home in Mt. Vernon. He was born October 30, 1921, in Halltown, Missouri, the son of the late Virgil and Elsie (Evatt) Pendleton.

During his years in the Military, Melvin lived in Springfield, Missouri later moving to Miller, Missouri where he resided for the remainder of his life. He was a 1940 graduate of Halltown High School and a member of the Miller Christian Church where he served as deacon and a trustee. He was also a member of the American Legion Post #120 of Miller. Melvin was always on the lookout for marbles, pens and pencils. And enjoyed sharing stories about his collection.

Melvin was a U. S. Army Veteran proudly serving his country from August 1942-February 1946. During his years of service, he was stationed at O'Riley General Hospital in Springfield, Missouri. Some of his duties included driving the ambulance to transport wounded soldiers from the train station to the hospital. Later driving Brigadier General Foster around the community.

Melvin was a cattleman, buying his first calf at a young age, turning it into a lifelong career.

On June 1, 1943 he married Mary Evelyn Hill. To this union was born four (4) sons. Rick, Randy, Russell, and Robert. Mary preceded him in death November 1, 1971.

On August 4, 1973 he married Wilma (Friend) Copeland and with this union came four (4) children. Johnny, Carol, Betty, and Kathy.

Melvin's health had deteriorated over the last few years and he was able to continue to live at home due the support of his wife, children and grandchildren. During these times, memories were made that will be cherished forever. A Special Thanks to grandson Grant Cameron for unselfishly dedicating so much of his time to help wherever and whenever needed.

He will be deeply missed by his loving wife of 41 years, Wilma; eight children, Rick Pendleton and friend Cyndie McNeely of Miller, Randy (Wileen) Pendleton of Mt. Vernon, Russell (Cheryl) Pendleton of Miller, Robert (Janice) Pendleton of Willard, Johnny (Cinda) Copeland of Bois D' Arc, Carol (Larry) Merritt of Nixa, Betty (Terry) Steeley of Springfield, and Kathy (Jim) Johnson of Springfield. 19 Grandchildren and numerous great grandchildren and great-great grandchildren. One sister, Lucille Simpson of Miller and several nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents Virgil and Elsie (Evatt) Pendleton, three sisters Regina Baldwin, Doris Williams, and Oma Pendleton and a brother Charles "Bud" Pendleton.

A graveside service, under the direction of Morris-Leiman-Mosher Funeral Home in Miller, will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday July 12, 2014 at the Miller Memorial Gardens Cemetery.

Visitation will be held from 7:00-9:00 p.m. on Friday in the Funeral Home Chapel.

Memorial donations may be made to the Missouri Veteran's Home, Assistance League, in care of the funeral home.
