Richard O. Montgomery

Richard O. Montgomery, 76 of Springfield, passed away on March 1, 2014 at home. He was born August 25, 1937, the son of Obert and Mabel Montgomery, in Greentop, Missouri. Richard served in the United States Army and received an honorable discharge in September 1959 at Fort Sheridan, Illinois.

Richard was married to Joellyn A. (Toni) Redden in August 1968. They were blessed with two daughters, Julie Ann Montgomery of Stockton, California and Tami Jo Montgomery (husband Steve Brown); and four wonderful grandchildren, Heather, Tony, Stephanie and David.

Richard retired from Emerson Electric in St. Louis. While working there he also graduated from the Missouri Auction School in Kansas City in February of 1981. He became a member of the Missouri Professional Auctioneers Association and enjoyed having a consignment auction house where he auctioned on weekends. After that, he also did freelance work with estate and charity sales.

In 1996, Richard moved to Springfield, Missouri and enjoyed several occupations: He worked at Fasco, was a tour guide at Fantastic Caverns, and for seven years was a door greeter at Walmart. Wherever he was, people loved him. He worked hard, had a great sense of humor, and always a ready smile.

Richard's greatest pleasures in life were working in his garden, sitting and talking with his wife Toni on the swing in good weather, and taking his beloved dog, Foxy, for walks in the park. His family and friends will miss him dearly.

He is survived by his wife, daughters, and grandchildren. He is also survived by three brothers and two sisters: Kenneth Montgomery and wife Ellen, Russell Montgomery and wife Lois, Jean Plowman, Gerald Montgomery and wife Cheryl, Norma and husband Steve Roberts; also sister-in-law Michelle and husband Brad Huff; brother-in law Joseph Redden; and aunts, cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be at Gorman-Scharpf Funeral Home in Springfield, Missouri on Thursday, March 6, 2014 from 6:00 pm - 8:00 p.m. A service will be held Friday, March 7, 2014 in the funeral home at 10:00 a.m., officiated by Chaplain Brandon Gardner, followed by a military honors ceremony at Missouri Veterans Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri, 3161 West Norton Road, Springfield, Missouri, 65803.
