Educator, world traveler, civic minded and socially active, beloved wife and mother, Mary Elizabeth Bright Belmear Alexander, 95, passed away peacefully on Sunday, May 8, 2011. She was born on June 15, 1915, the first of four children to Dr. Andrew J. and Wilhelmina Bright in Nashville, TN.
She was educated in the Louisville, KY public schools before earning her BA degree at the University of Louisville and Master's degree from Columbia University (NY). Additionally, she did post graduate work at the University of Kentucky, Purdue University, University of Michigan, Vassar College, Vanderbilt University and the University of Wisconsin (Madison).
Mrs. Alexander taught for 42 years in the Jefferson County, KY School District principally at Central High School and Atherton High School. As a resident of Louisville, Mrs. Alexander enjoyed memberships in various organizations: the Congregational Church, a member of the Board of Directors of Nazareth College, now Bellarmine University, National Conference of Christians and Jews, Speed Museum, Jefferson Club, Louisville Fund for the Arts, the Evening Bridge, Enduring Peace, Louisville Science Center, and the American Association of University Women.
Mrs. Alexander relocated to the Fort Myers/Cape Coral area in 1996. She enjoyed memberships in the Fort Myers Congregational Church, the American Association of University Women and the SW Florida Symphony Society. Dr. and Mrs. Alexander enjoyed traveling extensively in Europe, the Middle East and Asia until his death in 1994.
Preceding her in death are her husbands, Herbert B. Belmear and Dr. Lloyd E. Alexander, her sisters, Lillian and Wilhelmina, her brother, Andrew and her step-son, Lloyd Alexander II.
She is survived by her daughter, Audrey Ann Greta Giffoniello, her stepson, Dr. William H. (Cassie) Alexander, her grandchildren, James P. (Eileen) Giffoniello and Lloyd (Lynn) Alexander III, her great grandchildren, Joseph and Maria Giffoniello and Abigail and Grace Alexander and her daughter-in-law, Cari Alexander.
