Edward Hardy Howell Obituary

August 24, 2014

Edward Hardy Howell met his Savior face to face on August 24, 2014. He began his long goodbye when diagnosed with Alzheimer's in 2003.

A" Florida Cracker", Edward was born second of ten children to Ozzie Lane and Bessie Phillips Howell in Gainesville, FL on February 10, 1930. At the age of two weeks he moved to Fort Myers, FL where, at the tender age of four, he sold peanuts on the streets to supplement family income. While still a young adult, Edward helped to rear his two younger siblings upon the early death of both his parents.

As a graduate of Fort Myers High in 1949, he was football captain in his senior year. The Golden Gloves trophy was his the same year and remains in the Fort Myers High trophy room. He returned to Gainesville and attended the University of Florida.

Edward began his lifelong floral career in 1950 working in the gladiolus industry. His work ethic was extraordinary, enduring until after his diagnosis. He owned and operated the Edward H. Howell Company, Wholesale Florist in Fort Myers from 1960 until retiring in 2004. He also owned and managed several rental properties in the Lee County area.

He accepted his Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ at an early age. He thrived knowing his Lord loved him unconditionally. He was constantly amazed at God's love for him and acknowledged his blessings. Edward was a charter member of McGregor Baptist Church.

He married Mona in 1979, and blended their families of six children. Their daughter, Courtney, made seven in 1983. Edward leaves behind his most treasured earthly gift; his family. He deeply loved and respected his wife Mona and his children…Connie Brock of Goodland, FL; Michael Howell (Rose) of Naples, FL; Kimberly Miller of Holiday, FL; Edward Howell, Jr. of Fort Myers, FL; Katherine Merritt (Roy) of Flat Rock, NC; and Dr. Courtney Howell of West Palm Beach, FL. He counted it a privilege to love and rear his step-son Charles Taylor of North Port, FL.

His legacy of love continues through twenty-three grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren.

In death, Edward is reunited with his parents and brothers Lane, John, Wayne, and Leon and his sisters Betty, Jeannie, and Valma.

Acting pallbearers are grandsons Joshua, Paul, Jeffrey and Brandon Howell, Johnethan Sevest, Shane Taylor and Casey Merritt. Honorary pallbearers are granddaughters Tamra Fore, Sommer, Sarah, Samantha, and Serenadee Howell, Emily and Lily Merritt.
