GEORGE JOHN DEKAN

George J. Dekan- athlete, musician, teacher, coach, builder, inventor, track and field official- died Jan. 9th at his home in Ft. Myers, FL, at the age of 93. Coach Dekan graduated from Wheaton, IL, High School, Northern Illinois State Teachers College, and the University of Alabama. He served in the United States Navy during World War II. Mr. Dekan taught electronics shop at Glenbard West High School and worked as a guidance counselor at Glenbard East High School. He earned many honors from local, state and national organizations during over thirty-five years teaching, coaching, and officiating. He invented and patented the Athletic Performance Analyzer and founded the Dekan Timing Devices Corporation and Dekan Athletic Equipment Corporation.
George and Mildred Dekan moved from West Chicago, Illinois, to Ft. Myers in 1984 and enjoyed playing golf at the San Carlos Golf Club. He will be missed by his family consisting of his children -Carolyn Hartmann (Gene), George Dekan (Ellen), Mary Ann Parent (Dan), grandchildren-Heather Erickson, Dan Dekan, stepchildren -Bob Boshell (Sarah), Jeff deGraffenried Jr. (Meredith), Judy Boshell - sister Marie O"Brien, special friend-Lu Moorhouse Fife, and many other relatives and friends.
He was predeceased by his parents, Florian and Veronica Dekan, his sister Anna Wiesbrock, brothers Frank, Louis, and Albert, granddaughter Sharon Dekan, stepson Bill Boshell, and wife, Mildred Dekan. The George Dekan Memorial Scholarship has been established through the Illinois State Track/Cross Country Coaches Association. A memorial service will be held at the Estero United Methodist Church, Broadway and Hwy.41, Estero, FL, on Saturday, January 25th at 10:00 AM.
