Herbert D. Conant

September 24, 2013

Herbert Davenport Conant. February 24, 1924 - September 24, 2013. Herb died at his home in Cape Coral, Florida after a long, valiant struggle with kidney failure. He was 89.  Born in Troy, New York to Herbert  S. Conant and Grace Davenport, he grew up in Bergen County, New Jersey, where he had been the captain of his football team, an Eagle Scout and later, scout troop leader. Fresh out of high school he became a Marine, serving in the South Pacific theatre of World War ll where he earned two purple hearts. Upon receiving his degree in Mechanical Engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology in 1950, Herb joined Turner Construction Company, which proved to be the start of a remarkable lifelong career. Beginning at line-and-grade, Herb rose to become President, CEO and Chairman of the Turner Corporation, his positions at retirement. Along the way, he opened Turner's Cleveland office becoming responsible for much of that city's skyline today. As someone who lived fully, Herb was an avid boater, fisherman and scuba diver as well as world traveler with his devoted wife and constant companion of 26 years, Carolyn. He is survived by his wife, Carolyn, and three children from his first marriage and their spouses: Kerry Kelso and her husband Dave, David Conant, and Muriel Garvey and her husband, Greg. His daughter Martha Brailsford predeceased him. He adopted his daughter Michelle Kenton during his second marriage. He will be missed by his grandchildren, Amanda, Cassandra, Jordan, Davey, Michael, Mathew and Malcolm. Herb will be remembered for and will continue to inspire his loved ones by his profound strength of character, keen intellect and zest for life. A remembrance will be held on November 27th in Cape Coral for family and friends.
