John Robert Cassani Obituary

JULY 2, 2013

John Robert Cassani, age 88 died July 2, 2013. John was the son of John Vincent and Francis (Peters) of St. Louis, MO. He was survived by his three sons John of Alva, FL, Michael of St. Louis, MO, and Timothy of Cincinnati, OH, his grandchildren Sarah Lepa of Ft. Myers, FL, Timothy and Paul Cassani of Cincinnati, his great grandchildren Felix (Max) and Emilia Lepa of Ft. Myers. Also surviving are his brothers Kenneth and Richard of St. Louis, MO. He was preceded in death by his wife Mary Ann, son James and grandson Daniel.

John served his country proudly during three years of active duty in World War II as a U.S. Army medic and was awarded three Bronze Stars resulting from the battles of Rome-Arno, southern France and Rhineland. After the war he served an additional four years in the U.S. Naval Reserve.

John married the love of his life, Mary Ann Lakin on November 10, 1951 who passed recently on June 17, 2013. John was a graduate of St. Louis University with a major in Commerce and Finance, and went on to be a successful business manager in Indiana and Michigan for the Wheelabrator Corporation. As retirees, John and Mary Ann were residents of Venice, and Ft. Myers, FL.

John had an enduring, humble and light hearted personality that endeared him to many. Known to his friends as "Skinny John" he was a typical product of the "Greatest Generation", often willing to serve without expectation for something in return. He was a constant example of the values we hold most noble and dear. Most notably, John was a dedicated and loyal husband of 61 years, a consummate family man, a teacher of life and a great patriot.

Services will be held in private. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Community Foundation of Sarasota County, for the Dan Cassani Memorial Fund, 2635 Fruitville Road, Sarasota, FL 34237.
