Kurt W. Nusbaum, 61, of North Fort Myers passed away Sunday, Dec. 8th. He was born Feb. 3, 1952 in Karlsruhe, Germany and became a U.S. citizen in 1964. At the age of 14 he began a career in the hospitality and hotel business. Kurt was a veteran of the Vietnam War serving in the US Navy as a medic. He served two tours aboard the aircraft carrier USS Oriskany. After his military service he attended the University of South Florida where he earned two Bachelors degrees. Since 1981 he managed numerous local hotels and was instrumental in building up the tourism industry in Lee County. Kurt was a loving husband to his wife, Carla and devoted father to his daughter, Amanda.
Kurt was an avid sailor and fisherman. He was an expert chess player and taught chess at the Port Charlotte Community Center. Every Sunday Kurt and his dad could be found playing chess while having breakfast at one of numerous North Fort Myers restaurants. Kurt had a herd of pet dwarf goats. He also kept numerous sugar gliders, one of which could usually be found in his pocket. Kurt faithfully donated blood and recently received a 12 gallon certificate.
Survivors are his wife of 28 years, Carla; daughter, Amanda Del Rosario (Waner); grandson, David Del Rosario and mother, Anna Pierson. He was preceded in death by his father, Lawrence Nusbaum.
A memorial service will be held Sunday, Dec. 22nd, at 2:00 pm at Harvey-Engelhardt Funeral Home, 1600 Colonial Blvd., Fort Myers. Memorial contributions may be made to the Salvation Army. Please visit www.harvey-engelhardt.com to offer a condolence.
