MARY EDWINA SHIELDS

Passed away in her Naples, FL home on September 25, 2013. She was born February 19, 1928 in Elmira, NY the daughter of the late Edward and Hazel Gradwell Hentz. She was predeceased by her brother, Charles Hentz. She was married to Peter F. Shields in Elmira, NY on August 18, 1951 and after residing two years in New Jersey, they moved to and lived in Wellsville, NY until their retirement when they relocated to Naples, FL. She graduated from the Elmira Free Academy, received her Bachelors of Science Degree from Marywood College and her Masters Degree in Education from the College of Liberal Arts at Alfred University. She was a primary school teacher in the Whitesville and Wellsville Central Schools for over 30 years and was honored as the Wellsville, New York's Teacher of the Year in 1986. Together with her husband of 62 years, Mary's primary calling in life was raising their three sons and providing for their future. They are Peter E. Shields, M.D. (Rose) of Williamsville, NY, Christopher J. Shields, Esq. of Fort Myers, FL and Paul J. Shields, M.D. (Ronda) of Naples, FL. Mary is also survived by seven grandchildren, Lauren, Drew, Meghan, Danielle, Christopher, Andrea and Nicole. She was an active member of the Allegany County Bird Club, Genealogical Society of Collier County, American Association of University Women, and various church and civic related organizations. She enjoyed her family, flower gardening and many outdoor activities. The family would like to thank all her caregivers, especially Claudette. In addition, her family wants to thank their father, Peter (Mary's husband), and her son, Paul for their unwavering commitment to her care.
Funeral arrangements are coordinated by the Naples Funeral Home. Condolences can be left at www.naplesfuneralhome.com. Visitation will be at St. Elizabeth Seton Church, 5225 Golden Gate Parkway, Naples, FL at 10:00 a.m. on Saturday, October 12, 2013 followed by a Mass of Resurrection at 11:00 a.m. Burial will take place immediately thereafter at Palm Royale Cemetery, 6780 Vanderbilt Beach Road, Naples, FL. In lieu of flowers the family respectfully requests donations be made to either Wellsville Volunteer Ambulance Corp., P.O. Box 206, Wellsville, NY 14895 or to the David A. Howe Public Library, 155 N. Main Street, Wellsville, NY 14895.
