Perry, Samuel Lloyd

January 14, 2013

Perry, Samuel Lloyd, age 95, passed away on January 14, 2013. He is survived by his wife, Carol; children Samuel L. Perry, Jr., and Elizabeth Perry; his Daughter in Law, Jackie Perry; Grandchildren Chandler Perry and Heather Weil; their spouses Diane Perry and Tim Weil; and Great-Grand Children Hayden Perry, Hazen Weil, Rowan Perry and Sophie Weil, all of whom referred to him affectionately as Boompa. Sam was born in 1917 in New York City and spent his early years in New Canaan, Connecticut. He was preceded in death by his three wonderful brothers, John, Richard and Ted. Sam graduated from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, Michigan in 1940 and has always been proud of the fact that the Michigan Wolverines were viewed as the number one college football team that year. Many Michigan alums, Sam included, rate that particular team as the best college football team ever. He joined the US Navy just after Pearl Harbor and served with distinction on various ships in the South Pacific. He left the service as a Lieutenant Commander. Sam was a geology major in college and joined Texaco in the mid-west district after his military tour. He lived and worked in Des Moines, Iowa, until 1962 when he purchased a Phillips 66 distributorship in Ft. Myers, Florida, where he lived for the next 50 years. In addition to owning and running a successful business of his own, he served as Board Chairman of Southwest Florida Banks, the holding company for the First National Bank of Ft. Myers. He joined the Florida Board of C & S Banks when his Banking Corporation was acquired. Sam and Carol recently moved to a beautiful waterfront apartment at the Grand Court in Tampa where they have lived in close proximity to many of their family members. A skilled and avid athlete, Sam lettered in squash in college, played competitive tournament tennis and had weekly golf games for many years with friends and/or family. He was also an excellent bridge player with a substantial number of master points. In 1982, Sam and his first wife, Marion Fahey Perry, who died in 1997, purchased a home in Blowing Rock, North Carolina, where they spent the summer months. It was in Blowing Rock where Sam met the former Carol Burgess who became his second wife. He has often commented that he was fortunate to have two great wives and two great marriages, the first lasting 51 years and the second 14. It is hard to imagine a better 95 year run than Sam's. His wife and family have been proud of the way he has lived his life each and every day. A Celebration of Life is in the planning stages and will probably take place in Blowing Rock, North Carolina this coming summer. Visit the online guestbook at
