Wally, 80, of Estero Florida, passed away on February 12, 2013. He was the first in his family to graduate from college, conferring a B.S. in Chemistry from St. Mary's University in Texas in 1954. He served one tour of duty in the US Army prior to conferring a PhD in Physical Chemistry from the Iowa State University in 1960.
During his professional career, Wally worked as a research scientist with Best Foods, Mobil Oil, NCR, as an Adjunct Professor at University of Florida, and as the head of a research and development team that received numerous awards at the Wright Laboratory, Wright Patterson Air Force Base in Dayton Ohio. In partnership with colleagues, he is credited with 3 patents: U.S. Patent Number H2,193, U.S. Patent Number 5,540,780, and U.S. Patent Number 5,002,798.
Wally was passionate about tennis as an avid fan, playing competitively throughout his life, winning tournaments, and consistently ranked at the County level. He and his friend, Jimmy Callan, founded the Tennis Team at Saint Mary's University leading the team to the city championship in 1953. Wally enjoyed many years playing at Virginia Hollinger Memorial Tennis Club in Dayton Ohio as well as serving as a board member and President; he also played at Dayton Indoor during these years. Most recently, he was a proud member of the tennis team at Fiddlesticks Country Club and Cascades.
Wally leaves behind his wife of 57 years, Joyce Haas (née Tauzain); his children Ann Gibson (Dayton, OH), Mike Haas (Eaton OH), Matt Haas (Estero FL), and Andrea Haas (Fullerton CA); his Grand Children Jonathan Gibson (Beavercreek OH), Christina Gibson (Kettering OH), Catherine Haas (Midway KY), Nicole Haas (Fairborn OH), and Andrew Haas (Estero FL); his Great Grand Daughter Giovanna Ignacio (Kettering OH); his sister Annette Rios (Irving TX); and many friends.
Relatives and friends are invited to call Thursday, February 14, 2013 from 6:00 until 8:00 p.m. at Shikany's Bonita Funeral Home, 28300 Tamiami Trail South, Bonita Springs. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Friday, February 15, 2013 at 10:30 AM at Our Lady of Light Catholic Community, 19680 Cypress View Drive, Fort Myers FL 33967. In lieu of flowers, the family requests sending support to Saint Mary's University in San Antonio tennis programs.
