William Massie Ligon 12/16/1922 - 12/17/2012

Bill was born in Lynchburg to Thomas James Ligon and Hallie Johns Ligon, 205 Boston Avenue. He attended Lynchburg schools and graduated Virginia Tech Aeronautical Engineering in 1947. Virginia Tech remained one of his great loves. Bill proudly served in the Navy during World War II as an Electronic Technician on a repair ship in the Pacific. After a long career as an Aeronautical Engineer, he retired from NASA in 1988 while living on Merritt Island, Florida with wife, Gloria.

Bill had passion for everything he did. Looking to find a fulfilling retirement pastime, he took up lapidary and silversmithing as a hobby. He then enthusiastically taught what he had learned. He generously imparted his vast knowledge of jewelry arts, sharing his remarkable talents, time and materials freely and without financial benefit. After the death of Gloria, his wife of 26 years, Bill returned to Lynchburg, moving to Westminster Canterbury in 2006. Reuniting with so many old friends there-as well as making many new ones-made the last years of his life very happy ones. He is survived by his children Kathy Anderson, Brandy Harris (John), Scott Ligon and Ginny Fleming; stepdaughters Joanne Eichholz and Susan McCarty; 7 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren and a host of loving friends. A memorial service is to be held in the chapel at Westminster Canterbury at 11:00 a.m. on Tuesday, January 15, with a brief reception immediately following.
