Arvid "Sid" Herje, 86, of Raleigh passed from this life to the next on October 26, 2013. He was born in Flekkefjord, Norway and as an infant, immigrated with his family to Staten Island, NY. Sid was a proud graduate of Port Richmond HS class of 1945 and became a naturalized American citizen after serving with the U.S. Army 7th Infantry Division in the South Pacific during World War II.
Sid began his 40-year career in the criminal justice system in 1952, when he was appointed to the New York City Police Academy as a new recruit. While a New York City police officer, he worked as a patrol officer in the 6th and 24th precincts, served as the department's Chief Armorer and Gunsmith, was a certified firearms instructor, and was a court accredited firearms expert. After 20 years with the New York City Police Department, Sid retired and moved to Raleigh with his family. In 1972, he accepted a position with the North Carolina Human Relations Commission where he coordinated and taught a course on Basic Police-Community Relations. He later accepted a position with the North Carolina Justice Academy in Salemburg, serving as an instructor until he was appointed Chief of Police in Carrboro where he served from 1979 until his retirement in 1992. In addition, Sid was appointed to the North Carolina Criminal Justice Education and Training Standards Commission in 1986 and served as a member representing the North Carolina Association of Chiefs of Police until 1991. Sid led the effort by the Commission to first mandate annual in-service firearms qualification for law enforcement officers in North Carolina.
Sid loved and honored God and was active in his church community; first at Zion Lutheran in Staten Island, NY where he served on the Board of Trustees and the Mission Board and at Grace Lutheran in Raleigh where he served on the Church Council and other committees. He was most-recently a member of Good Shepherd Lutheran in Raleigh.
He is survived by his wife Bonnie G. Herje of Raleigh, daughters Jerri Stockland (Wayne) of Bella Vista, AR; Linda White (Curt) of Holly Springs, Nancy Herje of Raleigh, Paige (Chuck) Wallington of Raleigh, Vi Cheek (deceased), five grandchildren, 8 great-grandchildren and many dear friends.
A memorial service to celebrate Sid's life will be held on Saturday, November 2nd at 3pm at Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 7000 Creedmoor Road in Raleigh.
The family would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at Springmoor Retirement Community for their loving care. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Springmoor Endowment Fund or to Hospice of Wake County.
