Betty Layne Hollinshead Long

Betty Layne Hollinshead Long, formerly of Roxboro, died peacefully at Brighton Gardens in Raleigh on February 27th. She was born in Durham on November 17th, 1929 to the late Dr. and Mrs. William Henry Hollinshead. She attended public schools in Durham and graduated from Durham High School in 1947. Afterwards, she enrolled at Vanderbilt University in Nashville, TN. There, she met the love of her life, Richard Gwynn Long, and they married on her 20th birthday. Betty Layne and Richard began their life together in Roxboro, where 4 of their children were born. They moved to Raleigh in 1958 and welcomed their 5th child before returning to Roxboro several years later. Betty Layne stayed busy with family life-constantly volunteering in her children's schools and chauffeuring all 5 of them and their many friends from one activity to another. She was a "hostess extraordinaire" who thoroughly enjoyed cooking and entertaining a crowd. The Long home was always filled with people. It was the gathering place for friends of their children, and weekend nights usually meant a full house with Richard and Betty Layne welcoming youth of all ages. In her later years, she loved spending time with her grandchildren and especially cherished daily visits from her great-grandson, Jack.

Betty Layne was predeceased by her parents, her husband, her daughter, Catherine Long Snodgrass, and her grandson, Richard Drewry "Drew" Winstead. Surviving are her brother, Warren Henry Hollinshead (Marilyn) of West Tisbury, MA, her daughter, Gwynn L. Winstead of Raleigh, and 3 sons, David H. Long (Rosalind) of Greensboro, NC, Richard G.
