James Albert Braswell

James was born July 26, 1933 the second child and the oldest son of the late Richard I. (Dick) and Ruby P. Braswell. He passed away on January 9, 2014 at the Durham VA Hospital. He was a US Army Korean War Veteran serving from 1950-1953. After his discharge from the Army, he went to Newport News, VA and learned to weld. James was a very good welder and after his training, he began welding on the "big ships". Later, when he decided to come back to Johnston County, he worked with Rockwell in Raleigh, NC as a welder. After becoming disabled, he worked at Strickland Open Air Market in Smithfield.
He had a complex hip replacement in 1999 and a broken femur in 2008 resulting in complete dependency on a walker. On December 30, 2013, he had the misfortune to break his femur again and was unable to recover from that break.
James was predeceased by his brother Worth Braswell, sisters Evelyn B. Creech and Rachel B. Frazier, and nephew Stephen A. Barnes. He is survived by his sisters Geraldine B. Barnes of Richmond, VA and Annette B. Rose of Princeton; nephews Dicky Creech and Mike Rose; nieces Patricia B. Allen, Alyce C. Farley and Brenda B. Mays; special friend Janice Lynch; and brother-in-law David Rose. James and David were very close.
The family will receive friends at Parrish Funeral Home in Selma on Monday from 2 - 3 PM followed by a funeral service at 3 PM with Rev. Dennis Pollock officiating. Burial will be in the Hephzibah Baptist Church Cemetery near Princeton.
