James Francis Elliott, MD, age 86, of Creedmoor, North Carolina, Northside Community, passed away on March 15, 2014 at his home following an extended illness.
Dr. Elliott was born in Catawba, North Carolina to Lois and Frank Worth Elliott, Sr. on December 6, 1927, and graduated from Catawba High School in 1943. He served in the Army Air Corps from 1946-1949 and in 1950 graduated from Lenoir-Rhyne College. Jim married Ida Mae Norris on August 18, 1953. He graduated from the Duke University School of Medicine in 1954 and interned from 1954-1955 at Walter Reed Army Hospital in Washington, DC as a lieutenant in the US Army. He completed his residency in psychiatry at the University of North Carolina Memorial Hospital in 1964.
Dr. Elliott worked in several different capacities for the State of North Carolina, most notably as the Director of Murdoch Center in Butner, North Carolina from 1957 until 1978. Following this, he served as a staff psychiatrist at John Umstead Hospital in Butner, and also worked for the Division of Medical Assistance within the Department of Health and Human Services. He and his wife Ida joined St. Paul's Lutheran Church in 1956, and served the church in many different roles over the more than 50 years he was a member.
Jim is preceded in death by his parents, Lois and Frank Elliott, Sr., his sister Marion Elliott Briggs, and his brother Frank Worth Elliott, Jr.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Ida Norris Elliott. He is also survived by five children: Lynn Elliott Caldwell and husband Paul; James F. Elliott, Jr. and wife Betty Ann, Brenda Elliott Williams and husband Greg, Theresa Elliott Oertel and husband Christian, and Dale Elliott and wife Chris Mengarelli. Also surviving are nine grandchildren: Rachel Williams, Elliott Williams, James Elliott, Brad Elliott, Sarah Caldwell, Carol Ann Elliott, Jeff Caldwell, Kennedy Elliott, and Reed Elliott. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews and their families.
Funeral services will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, March 18, 2014 at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Durham, NC. The Rev. Scott Anderson of St. Paul's will conduct the service. Interment will immediately follow at the columbarium at St. Paul's. Arrangements are by Cremation Society of the Carolinas. There will be a reception at St. Paul's following the funeral service and interment.
