Lynn P. Freedman, 85, died peacefully on May 28, 2014 in Raleigh, NC. She was the first of two daughters born to Archibald and Ruth Polak of Mount Vernon, NY. While Lynn lived in New York most of her life, she also resided in Bethesda, MD; Hyannis, MA; Long Beach, CA; Raleigh NC; and Seattle, WA.
Lynn graduated with honors from New York University in 1949 and received a Master in Library Science degree from Columbia University. She was a successful corporate librarian working for national companies such as ITT/Continental Baking, Union Carbide, and Consumer's Union (publisher of Consumer Reports.)
Survivors include: daughter Janice and granddaughters Adriana and Elena (Raleigh, NC); son Matthew and grandsons Christopher and Alexander (Alexandria, VA); son Jonathan Freedman and daughter-in-law Elizabeth Smith-Freedman and their sons Andrew, Duncan, and Cameron (Natick, MA); her sister Ann Winkelstein (Pittsburgh, PA) and several cousins.
Lynn was an adventurous traveler and visited Europe frequently, including a trip to East Germany in 1964. She also visited China in the 1980s with a national librarians association when organized tours were first allowed. Lynn was an avid hiker and member of the Appalachian Mountain Club for years. She was also a vociferous reader, and was particularly fond of Agatha Christie mysteries and Jane Austin novels.
A family gathering is planned later in the summer in Nantucket, one of Lynn's favorite places.
