Mary Eleanor Smith, 100, formerly of Milford, Illinois, died November 3, 2013 at Clare Bridge Assisted Living in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.

Born in Mercer County, Illinois on December 16, 1912, Eleanor was a daughter of Glenn F. Longley and Mary Leah Skinner. She was preceded in death by her husband Charles H. Smith.

Eleanor graduated from the University of Illinois with a degree in Home Economics. She worked as an Extension Advisor in Iroquois County from 1937 to 1940. She married Charles H. Smith, an Iroquois County farmer on July 6th, 1940. After welcoming two daughters, Eleanor returned to teach English and Language Arts in the Bryce, Ash Grove and Milford schools. She and Charles later retired to Urbana, Illinois, where they were members of the United Methodist Church.

Eleanor was a loving mother, a good neighbor, an involved citizen and an outspoken and natural leader. She loved reading and was a volunteer for the Adult Education program in the Urbana School District.

Eleanor is survived by her daughters Rosalie Heineman (Don) of Chapel Hill, North Carolina, and Jane Slaven (Arthur) of Hillsboro Beach, Florida. She is also survived by grandchildren Michael Slaven, Peter Slaven, Kate Heineman Cheshire (Scott), and Justin Heineman (Deborah), and by great-granddaughters Grace Louise Heineman and Katherine Sarah Heineman.

A memorial service will be held at a later date in Illinois. The family would like to thank the staff of Clare Bridge and UNC Hospice for their compassionate care.
