"Podgie" Brann Sr.
February 1, 1931 – Jan 31, 2014
Nelson Maitland Brann, Sr., 82, known to many as "Podgie", passed away Friday, January 31, 2014 at UNC Chapel Hill. Maitland lived 82 blessed years with very few health concerns until his last 2 weeks of life, challenged with two aneurisms and complications therein.
Maitland was born in Danville, VA growing up with a brother, HG Brann and sister, Jewel. He met the love of his life, Laura Ann Jones in 1949 and they began the most beautiful journey together in marriage in 1951. He served in the US Air Force during the Korean War.
Maitland worked for Jesse Jones Sausage Co. in Danville, beginning his career as route salesman, driving every back road in the state of VA, making Jesse Jones a household name. Later as Sales Manager, Jesse Jones distribution spread from VA to NC and SC. Jesse Jones sold to General Mills in 1967 and operations moved from Danville to Garner, NC and all the family moved to the Raleigh area. Maitland was VP of Sales for Jesse Jones Products, operating under Goodmark Foods, Inc. Maitland retired in 1989 with 39 years in service.
Maitland loved his family beyond measure. He loved his friends sharing many great times and made wonderful memories over all these years. He loved antique cars and he loved playing golf the past 34 years at MacGregor Country Club.
Maitland is survived by his wife of nearly 63 years, Laura Ann Jones Brann; son, Nelson Maitland "Nim" Brann, Jr. and his wife Kelly; daughter, Kathy Brann; grandsons, Coleman Maitland and Gordon Vincent Brann; sister, Jewel Brann Riddle; sister-in-law, Franny Gourly Brann; brother-in-law, Cassill William "Billy" Jones, Jr. and wife, Shelby; and many nieces and nephews.
A memorial service will be held at White Plains United Methodist Church on Wednesday, February 5th, at 12 noon. Following, there will be a reception and visitation with family in the Fellowship Hall.
