Raymond Clair Upchurch, Sr.

Raymond C. Upchurch, Sr., 88, of Raleigh, died Thursday, September 19. Born in Durham, NC, he was the eldest son of Raymond C. Upchurch and Martha Emerson Upchurch Whitesell. Upchurch was a 1943 graduate of Broughton High School in Raleigh and served in the U.S. Marine Corps during World War II. He earned a bachelor's degree in animal husbandry from N.C. State College in 1949. Upchurch served as agricultural county agent in Lenoir County before becoming manager of Fieldstream Farms, a purebred Hereford cattle and Quarter Horse farm in Wake County, in 1952. He was a real estate broker from 1963 until his retirement in 1997, specializing in farms and rural land in Wake and neighboring counties. Upchurch was preceded in death by his wife of 49 years, Vivian Ellis Upchurch, in 1997, and by his brother, Stuart Upchurch, and sister, Martha Upchurch, both of Raleigh. He is survived by his children, Carol Upchurch and her husband, Robert Gerhart, of Greensboro, NC; Joy Upchurch of Columbia, SC; Raymond Upchurch, Jr., of Raleigh; and June Upchurch and her husband, George Webb, of West Palm Beach, FL,; his grandson, Jordan Webb, of Asheville, NC; and his sister-in-law, Barbara Upchurch, of Raleigh. The family will have a private service.
