Dr. Robert Edward Gardner, 74, passed away Monday, November 25, 2013 at Rex Hospital in Raleigh, NC. Dr. Gardner was born August 19, 1939 in Lynchburg, Virginia. At age four, he was adopted by A. B. and Maggie Gardner of Galax, Virginia.
Dr. Gardner was an Army veteran, a 1959 graduate of the University of Richmond, Phi Beta Kappa, Gamma Sigma Epsilon (Hon, Chemistry), Beta Beta Beta (Hon. Biology), a 1964 graduate from the University of Virginia Medical School. His career included family and general medical practices in Virginia and North Carolina. He was the first medical director of Wake Med Emergency Room. At the time of his death, he was a Medical Consultant with the N.C. Department of Health and Human Services DDS Division in Raleigh.
Dr. Gardner was well respected as a Physician and will be remembered for his kindness and sense of humility and sense of humor. He donated his body to UNC Medical School for educational purposes.
He is survived by his loving wife Andrea Pittman Gardner; five sons; Robert, Claiborne, John Robert, Robert Edward, David; daughter; Debra Lin; eight grandchildren, two great-grandchildren, and two stepsons: Linwood Johnson and Phillip Johnson.
A memorial service will be held at First Presbyterian Church in Raleigh on December 1, 2013 at 3:00 PM. The family will receive visitors in the Lisa Ham Gathering Space following the service. The address for the church is: 112 S Salisbury St, Raleigh, NC 27601.
