Robert D. "Bob" Kennedy, age 84, of Zebulon died at Rex Hospital on 16 June 2014.

Bob retired to Zebulon in 1988 after 35 years of service with the Central Intelligence Agency. He was a member of their Senior Executive Service and served many years in the Far East.

Bob was born in Vigan in the province of Ilocos Sur, Philippines of missionary parents. He graduated from high school in Little Rock, Arkansas receiving an honors scholarship to Columbia University in New York where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. He then attended Columbia's School of International Affairs and the East Asian Institute, receiving his M.I.A. in 1952.

Bob was an inveterate punster who loved music and served at the classical music station WCPE, first as an employee and then later as an active volunteer. He was an active member of the Zebulon Baptist Church Choir since 1988 and also served as the song leader of the Zebulon Rotary Club.

He was married to the late Geraldine Herring Kennedy for a happy fifteen years. They enjoyed travel, reading, attending the Raleigh Spy Conference, spending time with family and friends, and checking out the Triangle restaurant scene.

He is survived by sons: James Kennedy of Baltimore and Edward Herring of Raleigh; daughters: Danielle Lippoldt of Paris, France, Michele Moore of Arlington, Texas and Barbara Herring of Raleigh; grandsons: Joshua Kennedy and Oscar Herring; granddaughters: Victoria Kennedy; Erika and Rachel Lippoldt; and Krista, Erin and Kathryn Moore.

He is also survived by his sister Jean Kennedy Anderson and sister-in-law Mary Ruth Kennedy, both of Arlington, Texas.

He was preceded in death by his first wife Joanne G. Kennedy, his sister Margaret Cherryhomes and his brother Paul B. Kennedy.

Funeral services will be held at Zebulon Baptist Church on Monday, 23 June at 11 a.m.
