Wade Winston Atkins

August 31, 1917 - May 5, 2014

Chapel Hill

Wade Winston Atkins, 96, of Chapel Hill passed away at Carolina Meadows on May 5, 2014. He was born to Wade Winston and Hattie Stokes Atkins on August 31, 1917, in Colfax, NC.

Wade graduated from Greensboro (NC) Senior High School (1935) and Duke University (1941). Always adventurous, a book he read led him to interrupt his undergraduate studies to join the Merchant Marines. Returning to Duke, he met Margaret Evelyn Starnes, who shared his spirit.

Wade joined the United States Marine Corps in 1943 and served in the Pacific Theater. He and Margaret married on July 2, 1950; ten days later, Wade received orders cancelling their honeymoon and deploying him to Korea. He received the Bronze Star with Combat V for his planning and logistical work before and during the Inchon Landing. He retired as a lieutenant colonel in 1965 and relocated his family to Chapel Hill, NC. In 1976, he retired from his second career as Associate Director for Accounting, Endowments and Trust Funds for UNC-Chapel Hill.

His marriage to Margaret was a very happy one and lasted more than 63 years. Their adventurousness turned transfers and new duty stations into opportunities for travel and vacations, and they continued to travel following Wade's retirement.

He delighted in his family. He and Margaret raised three sons, one with special needs. His sons still marvel at his patience, even during their teen-age years. Later, get-togethers with his sons and their families intensified the twinkle in his eyes.

Wade is survived by his wife Margaret; two sons, Winston (Kathy Green) and Philip (Tammy Atkins); and four grandchildren: Wade, Adrian, Grace, and Meg. His son Dennis predeceased him.

Wade felt life was an adventure to savor; we already miss his spirit in our own lives.

Memorials may be made to Arc of Orange County, 208 North Columbia Street, Suite #100, Chapel Hill, NC 27514, (919) 942-5119 or http://www.arcoforange.org/.
