BENNETT, C. Gary

C. Gary Bennett, of New Milford, passed away peacefully on November 8, 2013 at Danbury Hospital. Born on November 10, 1947 to the late Norma Ticehurst Mullins and the late Robert A. Bennett. Gary was also predeceased by his step-father Robert Mullins. He was the loving husband of Mary (McGill) Bennett.
Gary attended school in Bethel, CT and graduated in 1967 from Henry Abbott Technical School as a machinist. He was employed by Jomal Machines and Contact Systems for many years and most recently with Candlewood Tool in Gaylordsville, CT.
Miry Brook Volunteer Fire Department in Danbury has benefitted from Gary's strong sense of service and volunteerism. He entered the department in his very early twenties and was elected Chief at 26, the youngest Chief in the State of Connecticut at the time. He stayed in this position for 14 years and served as trustee until the time of his death. He was an active member of the Danbury Volunteer Fireman's Council for many years.
Besides his love of the fire service Gary was an avid fan of the Boston Red Sox and New England Patriots. He also enjoyed fishing and watching NASCAR races each Sunday, especially to cheer on Dale Jr, but was always happiest when at the beach. Gary will be most fondly remembered by those who loved him for his willingness to help and his ability to make any situation better with his infectious sense of humor.
In addition to his wife, Mary, Gary is survived by his sons, David A. Bennett of Vermont, Robert E. Bennett of New Milford, Michael S. Bennett and wife Francine of Danbury, his step-son Kevin Merritt and wife Ashleigh of North Salem, NY, step-daughters Jennifer Merritt of New York City and Laura Merritt of New Milford, his sister Audrey J Leete and her husband William of Prospect, CT, his three grandchildren Tiffany, Michael Jr., Justin and two nieces Kimberly A. Staples and Karen A. Hunt.
Funeral services will be held at St. John Episcopal Church, New Milford, on Monday morning at 11:00 a.m. Interment will be private. Family and friends may call at the Green Funeral Home, 57 Main St., Danbury, on Sunday from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m.
The family has requested that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to either The Arthur C. Luf Children's Burn Camp (www.ctburnsfoundation.org/cbc.htm) or the Juvenile Diabetes Foundation (jdf.org)
