Burke, Edward J.
Edward "Sonny" J. Burke of Southbury and long-time resident of Brookfield, CT, has passed on to be reunited with his beloved wife, Mary (Healy) Burke of 57 years. He was born Nov. 21, 1930, in Boston, MA during the great depression. He was educated for 8 years at a catholic elementary school, followed by 4 years at Boston College High School. With the start of the Korean War, Ed joined the US Navy serving 4 years on the aircraft carrier, USS Salerno Bay and then the USS Saipan. After discharge, Ed attended Bentley School of Accounting evenings until he obtained an Associate Degree in accounting. He obtained an accounting position at the Walter Baker Chocolate Plant of General Foods Corp. where he worked for 6 years before being transferred to corporate headquarters in White Plains, NY. He worked there for 24 years before retiring in 1988. He was as active volunteer with Boy Scout Troop 8 in Brookfield as treasurer and fund raiser for over 20 years. He also served on the Danbury Hospital Auxiliary Board for 6 years as treasurer of the gift shop. While in Brookfield, he continually associated with the St. Joseph Church Men's Club and the maintenance committee until 2005 when he and Mary moved to Heritage Village. Ed was a loving father, grandfather and father-in-law and a devoted family man. His favorite vacation was spending every summer with his entire family at "the Cape". He was an avid Red Sox fan and an animal lover who always had a canine best friend by his side. He is survived by 7 loving children, Terri Burke and partner Mark Gaier, Michael Burke and wife Diane, Kitty Burke, Edward Burke, Trish O'Marra and husband Colin, Thomas Burke, Cindy Byers and husband Jeff; and his grandchildren, Timothy, Joseph, Brian, Erin, Jennifer, Matthew, Mary and Leslie. At his request there will be no services or wake. May he rest in peace. Arrangements by Carpino Funeral Home, Southbury. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the , in honor of Edward Burke.
