Walter 'Wallie' Jahn, 58, was running enthusiast, of New Milford, died July 19 at the Kent Specialty Care Center in Kent after a long battle with frontotemporal dementia, Pick's Disease. Known by everyone as Wallie, he attended New Milford schools and graduated from Henry Abbott Technical School. He joined the Air Force in 1972, stationed first in Biloxi, Miss. He then served with the National Guard at Westchester County Airport in New York as a technical sergeant. Driven by his love for New Milford and passion for running, he opened the Road & Track Sports shop in New Milford in 1991 and operated it until 2010, when his disease forced him to close the business. He was active for decades organizing popular road races, particularly the Polar Bear Run in late winter and the Moonlight Run 5K in late spring. He is survived by a sister, Dottie Lynch, of Sherman; a brother, Rickie Jahn, of South Salem, N.Y.; a nephew, Brian Lynch, of Sherman; and three nieces, Rachel Lynch, of Sherman; Melissa Stephens, of Boston; and Laura Jahn, of South Salem. He was predeceased by his father, Henry Jahn, and his mother, Hedy Baumiester Jahn. A graveside military service will be held Aug. 5 at 2 p.m. at Center Cemetery in New Milford.
