SURPRISE - Allen Blitstein died on July 4, 2014, at age 80. He was born on July 26, 1933, in the Bronx, New York. Following high school he joined the Marine Corps, serving for over two years and obtaining the rank of Sergeant. He then moved to California with his family and graduated from the University of California at Northridge. He went on to earn a Ph. D. in Economics from the University of Minnesota, where he met his wife, Carole. He taught Economics at the University level until his retirement in 1998, when he moved to Arizona. In retirement he pursued his strong interests in astronomy and stamp and coin collecting. He was preceded in death by his parents, Alice and Daniel Blitstein; and nephew, Irving Brodsky; and is survived by his wife, Carole; sisters, Muriel Brodsky and Lori Blitstein of California; nieces, Susan and Rosalee; and nephew, Jay. Inurnment at the National Memorial Cemetery of Arizona in Phoenix. Memorials preferred to the donor's choice of charity. Arrangements entrusted to Surprise Funeral Care, Surprise, AZ.
