DOVER - Alfred "Al" C. Mac Leod passed away peacefully at home comforted by his family on Oct. 23, 2013 after a brief yet courageous battle with cancer. He was born, Nov. 20, 1935 in Boston, Massachusetts, the son of the late Ruth Young Goldthwaite and Alfred Mac Leod. He proudly retired from the United States Air Force in 1973 as a Technical Sergeant with 20 years of honorable service. His service, afforded him the opportunity to serve and protect his beloved country with assignments in Europe and the States. He was a pioneer in radar and intelligence operations monitoring troop and security maneuvers around the world. His final assignment brought him to the Dover Air Force Base. Al followed his military service with a second career as a Veteran's Benefits Coordinator with the U.S. Veterans Administration. Al dedicated himself to serving the needs of his fellow military comrades for 18 years, retiring in 1997. Al was an avid follower of politics, taking great pride in his country. He shared a lifetime love of American history often amazing those around him with his ability to recall facts of historical significance. Al enjoyed traveling, especially cruising the blue Caribbean Sea with his beautiful wife by his side. His open and warm heart was evident in the way he loved his family and his calm and loving relationship with many, many pets. He is survived by his devoted wife of 41 years, Ingrid; and his children, Sylvia Brownlee, Michael Mac Leod, Victoria Ford and her husband Jeff, all of Smyrna; a brother, Robert; brother-in-law, Joerg Schulz and wife residing in Germany; and many cousins. Visitation will be Tuesday, Oct. 29, 2013 at 11:30 a.m. with a memorial service at 12:30 p.m. in the Faries Funeral Chapel, located at 29 S. Main St. in Smyrna, followed by a private graveside service at the Delaware Veteran's Cemetery to include full military honors.
