MILFORD - Gary W. Layman, USAF Senior Master Sergeant Retired, died suddenly at home on Thursday, June 19, 2014. Mr. Layman was born July 18, 1946 in Crocker, Mo. He joined the U.S. Air Force on Dec. 2, 1964. His first assignment was in England, where he met his future wife Christine. Gary was highly decorated throughout his 21 years in the Air Force before retiring on March 31, 1986 as a Senior Master Sergeant. He then went to work for the Department of Defense/N.S.A. traveling around the world. During his tenure at the DOD/NSA, Gary was involved in the coordinating of a smooth technical transition into the new millenium. He was also involved in getting things up and running at the White House after 9/11, before finally retiring in 2007. While traveling, Gary became especially fond of visiting Budapest, Hungary, where he met and continued to visit several dear friends and co-workers. Gary was a member of the American Legion in Milford and the N.R.A. He enjoyed working with computers, collecting old telephones and coins. He loved to travel throughout the world and would write journals documenting his travels. Gary was preceded in death by his father, Winfred Scott Layman; his mother, Nancy Belle (Pemberton) Driskell; and his step-father, Frank Driskell. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Christine; his daughter, Theresia Layman and her companion Anthony Bennett, of Williamsburg, Va.; two sisters, Mary Kathryn Leonard and her husband Ron, Shirley Ann Lopez and Ronnie Driskell, all of Richland Mo.; his mother-in-law, Anna Eckert, of England; two sisters-in-law, Lisa Blanes - Eckert and her husband Toni, of Spain and Sonya Leach, of England; a brother-in-law, Gunther Eckert and his wife Lynne, of England; as well as several beloved nieces and nephews. Funeral services will be held at 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 27, 2014 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford where a viewing will be held from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. Burial with Air Force Honors will be in Delaware Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Patriots Way, Millsboro, DE.
