DOVER - Gilda Liva Caruso, formerly of Rutherford, N.J., passed away peacefully in her sleep on Thursday, Nov. 29, 2012. Gilda lived a full and dynamic life, surrounded by many loving family members and friends, and left a warm impression on all who knew her. Born in Bedford, Indiana on Oct. 12, 1914, and the eldest daughter of six children, Gilda helped to raise some of her youngest siblings and remained close to them throughout their lives. Gilda attended Indiana University, and in 1938 married Dr. Paul F. Caruso. During World War II while Paul was in active duty in South America, Gilda contributed to the war effort by working on aviation instrument panels. Gilda and Paul spent most of their years in Rutherford, N.J. where Gilda assisted Paul with his medical practice and they raised their two beloved children, Dr. John Caruso and Mrs. Erica Caruso Giles. Gilda and Paul moved to Dover in 1983, where Gilda played an active role in the family of her daughter Erica, and became engaged in the Dover community through volunteerism and participation in many social groups, including: volunteering at Kent General Hospital, working with the Dover Symphony and at the Dover Library, dancing with "Steppin' Seniors", serving others through Citizen to Citizen, sharing in the fellowship of her church, and enjoying her friends in the Red Hat Club. Gilda was a whiz at crossword puzzles and Jeopardy, and while many will remember her generosity with not only her time, but with the delicious soups and baked goodies that she enjoyed giving to friends, even in her later years, Gilda's love for life and adventure took her on travels to Alaska, the Panama Canal, and Italy. Gilda is preceded in death by her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Harry Liva; by her loving husband, Paul; and by her five siblings. Gilda is survived and will be lovingly remembered by her son and daughter-in-law, John and Pam Caruso of New Orleans, La.; her daughter and son-in-law, Christopher and Erica Giles of Wyoming, Del.; her grandchildren, Jennifer Giles McClay, of Richmond, Va., and Michael Giles of Baltimore, Md., and their respective spouses; and many nieces and nephews across the country.
