HARRINGTON - Jacob W. Kiefer Sr. passed away on Thursday, Dec. 12, 2013 at Bayhealth-Milford Memorial Hospital. He was born to the late William and Mary Kiefer. Jake served his country proudly in the US Army during the Korean Conflict. He was a proud member of the 7th Infantry, 32nd Battalion, and was honored to have served his country. Jake retired as a Lieutenant from the Morris County Sheriffs Department in New Jersey, after 17 years of service. After moving to Delaware, Jake became interested in harness racing. Horses were his hobby and he was quite good at doing bloodlines and became a pedigree expert. He shared his knowledge and talent with his grandson and together they bonded over their love for horses. In his younger years, Jake loved to hunt and fish. He was a member of the American Legion Post CKRT#7 of Harrington, where he was a past commander and currently a service officer, VFW, U.S. Trotting Association, DE Standardbred Owners Association, 32nd Infantry Regiment Association, Korean War Vets Association, New Jersey State Policeman Benevolence Association #298, and was active at the St. Stephens Episcopal Church in Harrington. Jake will be remembered for his great sense of humor and orneriness. He was always joking about something. Jake was never bashful to tell you how he felt whether good or bad, but if Jake liked you, then you had a friend for life. He will be greatly missed. He is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Jacob W. and Robin Kiefer Jr., of Boonton Twp, N.J.; daughter and son-in-law, Debra and Andy Dowell, of Gainesville, Fla., daughter, Janet Kiefer of St. Petersburg, Fla.; brothers, George Kiefer of Georgia; Richard Kiefer of Bridgeville, and William Kiefer of Jupiter, Fla.; and five grandchildren.
