DOVER - John "Jack" Guy Newman died Thursday, May 16, 2013 at Delaware Veterans Home under the care of Delaware Hospice. Mr. Newman was born on June 25, 1926 in Newark, N.J. the son of Sidney and Henrietta Newman. He graduated from Bergenfield High School in New Jersey. Shortly after graduation he enlisted in the Navy and served in the Philippines during WWII. After the war, he received a BA in education from the University of Pittsburgh where he also played tight end on their football team. He married Barbara Blair in 1948. They were married for 54 years until her death in 2003. He went on to earn his MA at Case Western University in Ohio and did further graduate work at Princeton University. He started his teaching career in Cleveland, Ohio at Shaker Heights and then spent most of his teaching career at Caldwell High School in New Jersey. While at Caldwell he taught history, was the Director of Student Activities, and was the head wrestling coach and an assistant football coach. He received the prestigious Harry E. Lake Award for his outstanding lifetime achievement in wrestling. After retiring from Caldwell High School in 1988 he and Barbara spent many years living in Panther Valley, Allamuchy, New Jersey. He was involved in selling real estate for Century 21 during that time. He and Barbara moved to Dover, Del. in 2000 where he quickly became involved with the Delaware Wrestling Alliance and the Beast of the East Wrestling Tournament. Throughout his life his family was the most important thing to him. His children's and grandchildren's activities happily consumed much of his and Barbara's life. He is survived by his son, John and wife Janella of Dover; his daughter, Deborah Post and husband Roger of Basking Ridge, N.J.; six grandchildren, Matthew Post, Leigh Ann Hinkle, Stacy Newman, Melissa Clare, Kyle Post, and Blair Newman; and four great-grandsons, Caden, Brody, Colton, and Tucker; he also leaves behind his loving companion of eight years, Margaret Hallett of Dover. Memorial services will be 4 p.m. on Saturday, May 25, 2013, at Pippin Funeral Home, 119 W. Camden-Wyoming Ave., Wyoming, where friends may call one hour earlier. The Rev. John W. Davis will officiate. Burial will be private.
