GREENWOOD - Russell Joseph O'Bier passed away on Saturday, July 12, 2014 at the Delaware Hospice Center, Milford. Mr. O'Bier was born Jan. 19, 1935 in Milford, the son of the late Wm. Joseph and Beatrice (Russell) O'Bier. He graduated from Bridgeville High School in 1952, received his B.S. from Washington College, Chestertown, Md. in 1957 and earned a M.Ed. from Salisbury University in 1975. Russell entered the U.S. Army National Guard, spending his basic training in El Paso, Texas, before being activated in the U.S. Army at the end of the Korean Conflict. He taught Chemistry and Math and Science at Milford High School from 1958 - 1963, Caesar Rodney High School from 1963 - 1967 and finally at Cape Henolpen High School from 1967 - 1988 before retiring. In his spare time, Russell enjoyed billiards, traveling, hunting, sports, house construction, and dancing to the big bands. He was a Mason for 50+ years, and was a member of the Hiram Lodge #21, AF & AM in Seaford as well as a member of the Milford Senior Center. The family would like to thank the staff of the Country Rest Home for their excellent care of Russell this year. He is survived by his wife of 47 years, Barbara Gorton O'Bier; four children, Todd Russell O'Bier and his wife Corrie, of Las Vegas, N.V., Stephanie Lynne Gorney and her husband Darren, of Oxford, Pa., Ann Ferentinos and her husband Pete, of Chadds Ford, Pa., and Gregory O'Bier, of Washington, D.C.; and seven grandchildren, Allie, James and Trent O'Bier; Mia Gorney; Dominic, Alexa and Demetri Ferentinos. Funeral services will be held at noon on Friday, July 18, 2014 at the Lofland Funeral Home, 102 Lakeview Avenue, Milford where a viewing will be held at 11 a.m. Burial will be in St. Johnstown Cemetery, Greenwood, DE. In lieu of flowers, the family suggests contributions to either Union United Methodist Church, 2 North Laws Street, Bridgeville, DE 19933 or to the Calvary United Methodist Church, 301 S.E. Front St., Milford, DE 19963.
