BELLE GLADE - Miriam (Cusa) Llorens Alvarez, 59, of Belle Glade, passed away on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2013, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Born on Oct. 30, 1954, in Guaimaro, Cuba, to Fernando N. Llorens and Ada V. Polo Llorens, Miriam was seven years old when the Llorens family emigrated to the United States, first settling in Elizabeth, New Jersey, and then moving to Belle Glade in 1971. Miriam graduated from the College of Pharmacy of the University of Florida in 1978. She served the residents of the Glades area as a pharmacist with compassion, humor and dedication for 35 years. In December 1975, Miriam married Jose R. Alvarez of Belle Glade, and together they raised three daughters. A passionate animal lover, the Alvarez home was always filled with dogs, cats, turtles, and Miriam's beloved parakeets, finches and her parrot, Pete. Miriam was also an avid Miami Dolphins fan. As season ticket holders, she and Jose rarely missed a game. Miriam loved spending summers at the beach with her family, combing the beach for sea glass and fishing for snook on the shore. Her energy, enthusiasm and humor were contagious. Affectionately called "Cusa" by her family and friends, she will be greatly missed. Miriam is survived by her husband, Jose; and three daughters, Jackie Nelson of Boca Raton, Fla., Joanna Alvarez of Austin, Texas, and Jaimee Alvarez of Tampa, Fla. She is also survived by her mother, Ada V. Llorens of Weston, Fla.; her brother, Fernando Z. Llorens of Stuart, Fla.; and her sister, Beatriz L. Koltis of Weston, Fla.; as well as four nieces and two nephews. A memorial Mass will be 12:30 p.m., Saturday, Dec. 21, 2013 at St. Philip Benizi Catholic Church in Belle Glade. The family requests that in lieu of flowers, donations be made to Moffitt Cancer Center, www.moffitt.org, or 12902 Magnolia Drive Tampa, Fla. 33612.
