TULL - Dr. James Robert - passed on January 11, 2014. JamesRobert Tull was born on February 3, 1929 in Tuscaloosa, Alabama. Growing up he lived in several states including Missouri,Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Illinois, Iowa, New York, and Ohio. Jim graduated from Madeira High School in Ohio in 1947 and received a BA in music from Ohio Wesleyan University in Delaware, OH. He served as a musician in the U.S. Navy from 1951-1955, achieving the rating ofsecond class petty officer. After completing military service, he taught Music, English, and Social Studies in Painesville Public Schools in Ohio from 1955-1959. Jim married Shirley Jean Nellis of Johnstown, NY in 1956. Hereceived a Masters degree from Western Reserve University in Cleveland, OH. Jim received a fellowship to Columbia University in New York City in 1963, where he studied in the Russian department, and in 1964 hebegan teaching instrumental music inentral Islip (NY) UFSD. In addition to his job in CentralIslip, Jim began a seven-yearperiod as an adjunct lecturer in music at Brooklyn College in 1964. In 1978 Jim received his Doctorate from the Ohio State University. Jim retired from Central Islip in 1993. During his retirement, he became an active member of the Retired Navy Musicians Association, the North Shore Pops Concert Band, and his church choir at Gloria Dei. Jim is survived by his wife Shirley, daughter Jennifer, son Aaron and grandchildren Wilhelmina and Wyatt. A memorial service will be held at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church in Huntington Station on January 18 at 2:00 P.M. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Gloria Dei, 22 E 18th St., Huntington Station, NY 11746, and the North Shore Pops Concert Band, PO Box 920, Huntington, NY 11743.
