ELLMER - Raymond J., attorney, former police officer, decorated WWII Veteran, dies at 93. Raymond J. Ellmer passed away peacefully on August 1, 2014 surrounded by his family. He was born February 13, 1921 in New York, New York to John and Marie and was brother to Eileen. He attended Cathedral Prep School. He graduated from St. Francis College and St. John's Law School under the GI Bill, and was admitted to the New York Bar in 1951. Ray practiced law for sixty-four years, the last twenty-nine with his son, Raymond Jude. During WWII, he served as a Sergeant in the US Army as a member of the 1st Infantry Division, the "Big Red 1". Ray was a part of the third wave landing on Omaha Beach. Ray spoke fluent German which he learned from his grandmother and was appointed Scout and forward observer, it was his division who held off the German attack on the Northern Sector during the Battle of the Bulge. He was awarded the Silver Star and the Bronze Star with two Oak Leaf Clusters. Upon his return Ray was appointed to the New York City Police Department in November 1945, he worked in Manhattan in uniform for six months before he made Detective and was assigned to the Elmhurst Squad. Ray as a young man was a Rockaway Beach and Jones Beach Lifeguard. He settled and raised his family in Long Beach. His family will always treasure the memories of beautiful days spent together on the Long Beach beaches. Ray is survived by his wife, Margaret, affectionately known as "Midge", his child-ren, Jeffrey (Johanna), Cathy (Joe), Lorraine (Carl), Raymond and Mary (Larry), stepchildren, Douglas, Patricia, Barbara (Billy), Michael and Donna (John), grandchildren, Eileen (Chris), Kristin (George), Philip, Matthew, Tiffany (Doug), Brian, Diana and Elizabeth, and great-grandchildren, Madison, Alexandra, Anthony, Jaclyn and Gabrielle. Ray was predeceased by his wife Joan and his son Jude who was named in honor of the family's patron Saint Jude. A Mass of Christian Burial was held on August 4, 2014 at San Marco Catholic Church in Marco Island, Florida.
