Jane Morgan Lyons
Mrs. Jane Morgan Lyons, 85 of Sunnyside, Staten Island, N.Y., died Monday February 18, 2013 at Mt. Sinai Hospital in Manhattan.She was born in Williamstown, and graduated from Long Island University with a bachelor's degree in business management. She moved to Meiers Corners, NY in 1959.
Jane served as executive director of Sea View Hospital Rehabilitation Center and Home for 15 years until her retirement in 1997. She continued to work to preserve its history, both in its role in the treatment and cure of tuberculosis and the part that African-American nurses played in the care of its patients during racial segregation.
In 1967, she was named an Advance Woman of Achievement and later served as a judge of the event. Jane was an active volunteer with the NAACP, United Cerebral Palsy, Community Health Action of Staten Island, and the Staten Island Museum. She was named one of the Top 100 Black Achievers in New York City of the 20th Century by the Schomburg Center for Research.
Her husband of 49 years, Arthur Lyons died in 2011.
Survivors include her son, Gregory Lee Bates.
