Bruce D., age 88, of 43 Sandy Stone Dr., Orangeville, PA and formerly of Ramsey, NJ. passed away peacefully at his home early Saturday morning, July 12, 2014. He was in failing health for the past year.
Born in Cleveland, Ohio on May 30, 1926, he was a son of the late Walter E. and Lillian Frances (Mayne) Bennett. He spent his early life in Chardon, Ohio and was a 1944 graduate of Chardon High School.
Following high school, he served proudly with the US Navy during World War II as a Pharmacist Mate third class on the USS Consolation in the Pacific Theatre.
Following his military service, he attended and graduated from Kent State University in Ohio and was a Fellow in Health Administration at Wayne University, Detroit, MI.
Bruce was employed as the director of Public Relations for the National Tuberculosis Association in Illinois. In 1960 he moved the New York City office of what is now known as the American Lung Association. There he served as manager and special consultant responsible for writing many publications on respiratory disease. He also served on the task force for emphysema and chronic bronchitis, retiring in 1987.
He was a resident of Ramsey, NJ from 1967-1997 when he moved to Pennsylvania.
Bruce was a wonderful husband, father and grandfather who was loved by all who knew him. He was a kind and generous man who would do anything for people in need of a hand. He enjoyed music (all genres), his extensive book collection and always said "there is something new to learn every day."
Surviving is his wife, the former Jane E. Towe, with whom he would have celebrated his 62nd wedding anniversary on August 16, 2014; his beloved children, Steven T. Bennett, Ramsey, NJ; Susan B., wife of Gene Daniel Fetterman, Jr., Orangeville, PA; Edward A. Bennett, and his fiancee Leslie, Midland Park, NJ.; Sarah B. Armand, Warwick, NY; seven grandchildren: Meghan, Katie, Brittany, Charles, Pierre Charles, Lauren, Jessica; and a niece, Connie James, Summerville, SC.
Funeral services will be held at 7:30 PM Tuesday at the Dean W. Kriner, Inc., Funeral Home & Cremation Service, 325 Market St., Bloomsburg, PA. The family will greet friends at the viewing from 6- 7:30 PM.
Graveside services will be held on Wednesday at 1 PM in St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, Dewitt, New York.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be sent to the , 57 N. Franklin St., Wilkes-Barre, PA 18701, in memory of Bruce.
