Monsignor David J., passed away on April 6, 2014. He was born in Hoboken, New Jersey on January 31, 1918 and is a product of Hoboken Public Schools. He attended both Fordham and Seton Hall Universities, obtaining his B.A. degree from Seton Hall in 1939. He studied for the priesthood at The Immaculate Conception Seminary in Darlington, New Jersey and was ordained a priest in the Archdiocese of Newark on June 19, 1943.
After serving two years at St. Mary's Parish in Elizabeth, New Jersey, he volunteered to serve in the United State's Navy Chaplain Corps and was commissioned in June, 1945. Initially he was assigned to the Navy Department in Washington, DC and then with the Second Marine Division in Japan. Thereafter, Father Casazza returned home to serve at St. Anthony's Parish in East Newark. At the outbreak of the Korean Conflict, Father answered Cardinal Spellman's call and returned to active duty.
During his military service, Father Casazza served four tours of duty with the United States Marine Corps; with the Second Marine Division in Japan; at the Marine Corps Recruit Depot in San Diego, California; at Marine Corps Air Station, Cherry Point, North Carolina; and as the Division Chaplain for the 1st Marine Division in Vietnam where he was awarded the Legion of Merit with the Combat V.
His naval assignments were with the Aircraft Carriers Kearsarge and Ranger; Naval Hospital Pensacola, Florida; Naval Air Station Port Lyote; Morocco; Naval Air Training Station, San Diego, California; post-graduate studies at Fordham University, New York; and, Force Chaplain of the Amphibious Force, Pacific Fleet in Coronado, California. His last assignment was as Senior Chaplain at the United States Coast Guard Academy in New London, Connecticut.
Upon his retirement from the Navy in June 1970, Monsignor Casazza returned to the Newark Archdiocese to serve as Pastor of St. Peter the Apostle Church in River Edge, New Jersey where he served for 18 years. He retired from active ministry in November, 1988. Monsignor resided in Avon-by-the-Sea, New Jersey and assisted on the weekends at St. Elizabeth Church in Avon.
Monsignor Casazza is survived by seven nephews and nieces and their families: Edward Borrone of Avon; David Borrone of Brigantine; Michael Borrone of Maplewood; Frank Bellezza of Little Silver; Marie Files of Little Silver; David Bellezza of Houston, Texas; and Euphemia Broderick of Little Silver.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Monsignor's memory to The Navy-Marine Relief Society, 875 Randolph Street, Suite 225, Arlington, Virginia 22203.
Family will receive friends at St. Peter The Apostle R.C. Church 445 Fifth Ave River Edge on Wednesday from 2-7 PM. A Vigil Mass will be offered at 7:30 following visitation. Msgr Casazza's funeral mass will be on Thursday morning at 10:30 AM at the church then to Holy Cross Cemetery for interment.
