Doris M., of Kinnelon, passed away at Chilton Memorial Hospital on February 17,2013 at the age of 88.
Doris is survived by her loving husband Sigmund Kneppel of 65 years. They were married in New York City on January 24, 1948.
She is lovingly remembered by her son David Kneppel and daughter-in-law Lucretia Kneppel of Bloomingdale, NJ and her daughter Debra Aniano and son-in-law John Aniano of Allentown, NJ and also her three grandchildren Samuel, Amanda and Rebecca Kneppel. She will also be missed by her half sister Gloria Nizzara-Giorgio of Brooklyn, NY and half brother Jim Nizzara of Stockton, California.
Doris was born in Brooklyn, NY on April 19, 1924. She graduated from Seward Park High School in Manhattan in 1942 and went on to earn her bachelor of arts degree from Brooklyn College in 1951, and her master of arts from Paterson State College (now William Paterson University) in 1968.
She was a respected elementary school teacher in the Kinnelon Public School System, receiving the New Jersey Governor's Teacher Recognition Award in 1992. She also developed and implemented the innovative Parents Are Teachers (PAT) reading program as well as introduced the first computer studies program in Stony Brook. She retired from teaching in 1993 after 28 years.
After her retirement, Doris became a prolific writer, having over 25 works published in magazines including "Good Old Days," "Nostalgia Magazine," "Mature Living" and "Birders Digest," among others.
Viewings will be held at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, 781 Newark Pompton Turnpike, Pompton Plains, on Thursday, February 21 from 2-4 and 7-9 PM with a service at 8 PM. A private burial will be held at the William C. Doyle Veteran's Cemetery in Arneytown.www.scanlanfuneral.com
