KINNELON — Services were held for Doris M. Kneppel, 88, of this community, who died on Sunday, February 17, 2013.

Mrs. Kneppel was born in Brooklyn, N.Y. She was an elementary school teacher in the Kinnelon public school system for 28 years before retiring in 1993. Also, she received the New Jersey Governor's Teacher Recognition Award in 1992. She developed the Parents Are Teachers (PAT) reading program and introduced the first computer studies program at Stony Brook School. And, she was a writer, with more than 25 magazine articles published.

Services were Thursday at the M. John Scanlan Funeral Home, Pompton Plains. Burial will be at William C. Doyle Veterans Cemetery, Arneytown. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the Parkinson's Disease Foundation or the Alzheimer's Foundation of America.

Mrs. Kneppel is survived by her son, David of Bloomingdale; her daughter, Debra Aniano of Allentown; her half-sister, Gloria Nizzara-Giorgio of Brooklyn; her half-brother, Jim Nizzara of Stocktown, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

She was predeceased by her husband, Sigmund.
