Dorothea Allen, 92, died April 15 at Merry Heart of Boonton Twp.
Born in Rockaway to the late Harry and Caroline (Tierney) Allen, she was a lifelong resident of Rockaway Borough.
After graduating from Montclair State Teachers College in 1941, she started her career at the Denville Junior High School. She then started teaching biology at Boonton High School in 1946, retiring in 1994.
Among the honors she had received were the Presidential Award for Excellence in Science Teaching in 1984 and the Morris County Teacher of the Year Award in 1990. She was elected to the Boonton High School Hall of Fame as a nationally recognized teacher and author in 1996.
Allen spent time doing research for local companies Warner Lambert and Bell Laboratories. She had also written five books for science teachers.
Allen is survived by her sister, Carolyn Allen; her brother, Robert Allen, both of Rockaway Borough; her niece and nephew, five grandnieces and nephews; and nine great grand nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her sister, Marguerite Allen Donofrio, and her infant brother, Harry.
Mass was offered at St. Cecilia's Church in Rockaway. Interment followed at Rockaway Presbyterian Cemetery. Arrangements were conducted by the Whitham-Kanapaux Funeral Home in Rockaway.
