BOGERT
Edward J., 93, of Naples, FL, passed away on April 7, 2014. A longtime resident of Hawthorne, Ed was born in Carlstadt and spent much of his childhood in Paterson where he graduated from Eastside High School in 1939. After graduation Ed took courses at Casey Jones School of Aeronautics and soon moved to Houlton, ME, where he was a civilian employee of the U.S. Army Air Forces. Though the U.S. had not yet officially entered WWII, workers in Houlton prepared aircraft for the oncoming war and secretly provided support for the Allied nations by funneling military hardware to them via the adjacent Canadian border. Ed formally enlisted in 1943 (Sgt. / 9th Air Force / 305th Bombardment Group) and served throughout Europe, but spent much of his service at Burtonwood Air Base near Manchester, England. While there he met his future wife, Florence (nee Tebb). They married in 1946 and had a long happy life together until her passing in 2006. After his military service Ed attended the Academy of Aeronautics (now Vaughn College) and after his graduation in 1947 he joined the faculty at the school. In 1966 after 18 years at the Academy, Ed joined Pan American World Airways as an instructor at their flight school at JFK Intl Airport. He trained not only Pan Am's flight crews but also others from around the world. In 1979 the Bogerts transferred to Miami, FL, where Ed achieved the high point of his career. Pan Am had been contracted to train crews for Air Force One and Air Force Two and Ed was assigned to this task which he carried on until his retirement in 1989. Ed is survived by three sons, Bob (and his wife Claudia Gibbs), Barry, and Douglas (and his wife Barbara); his sister Caroline Bogert; and four grandchildren, Kendall, Corbin, Caroline and Andrew. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, May Taylor. He was predeceased by his daughter-in-law, (Barry's wife) Ann Morris Bogert. Arrangements were made by Fuller Funeral Home in Naples, FL. A funeral service will be held at 3 PM on Sat. June 21 at St. Paul's Episcopal Church at 4 Woodland Road in Montvale, NJ. A private internment of the combined ashes of Edward and Florence Bogert at George Washington Memorial Park in Paramus will take place at a later date. In lieu of flowers, the family strongly urges donations in Ed's memory to the Alzheimer's Support Network, 660 Tamiami Trail North, Suite 21 Naples, FL 34102 (alzsupport.org); of NJ, 400 Morris Avenue, Suite 251, Denville, NJ 07834 (alz.org/nj/); or to the scholarship fund at Vaughn College, 86-01 23rd Avenue, Flushing, NY 11369 (vaughn.edu/give-a-gift.cfm).
